Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the romantic comedy “Blended,” which reunites Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, who previously shared the screen in “The Wedding Singer” and “50 First Dates.”

The duo play single parents who never want to see each other again following a disastrous blind date. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week.

The film was directed by Frank Coraci, who previously collaborated with Sandler and Barrymore on “The Wedding Singer” Ivan Menchell & Clare Sera wrote “Blended,” which was produced by Mike Karz, Jack Giarraputo and Sandler.

Hollywood’s Best & Worst Casting News of 2013 – From ‘Batman vs. Superman’ to ‘Fifty Shades’

The year 2013 was a busy year for casting directors who scrambled to fill high-profile roles and film reporters who raced to report those decisions. For every actor that won the casting lottery, hundreds more lost out on life-changing roles. While these decisions can’t really be judged until the movies actually hit theaters and we can finally see these performances, TheWrap has ruled which choices were the best and which ones left us scratching our heads. Enjoy!

BEST

Chris Pratt, “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Feb. 5) — It turns out Pratt’s surprise casting in “Moneyball” was merely a sign of things to come. The “Parks and Recreation” star is a leading man-in-the-making who has just needed an opportunity to prove himself. Marvel agreed, and the company’s faith in Pratt seems to have paid off, as the first photo the actor released of his jacked-up physique was startling. Pratt has got the perfect sense of humor to fit Peter Quill, aka Star Lord. Universal clearly has faith in his rising stardom, as the studio also plans to entrust him with the lead in “Jurassic World.”

Quvenzhane Wallis & Cameron Diaz, “Annie” (Feb. 8 & June 26) — With attitude to spare, the precocious nine-year-old who scored an Oscar nomination for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” was the natural choice for Sony’s hip-hop flavored reboot of the classic musical. While Sandra Bullock initially flirted with the villainous role of Miss Hannigan, Diaz is a better fit for the character, who is getting a much-needed makeover for the new movie. We can’t wait to see the sparks fly on Christmas Day.

Drew Barrymore, “Blended” (rumored Feb. 21) — This didn’t seem a big deal when it was announced, but Barrymore is the only one of Adam Sandler‘s love interests that he’s had real chemistry with. Warner Bros. released the trailer for the Africa-set romantic comedy on Tuesday and while it seemingly stays close to Happy Madison’s formula for success, there’s no denying it was a stroke of casting genius putting those two back together again after “The Wedding Singer” and “50 First Dates.”

Shailene Woodley, “The Fault In Our Stars” (March 19) — While “Divergent” may end up being a misstep for the budding “Descendants” star, this cancer-driven drama is the sort of tearjerker that will expand her fan base and could even put her back in the awards conversation. Up-and-coming director Josh Boone directs from a script by Woodley’s “Spectacular Now” screenwriters Michael Weber and Scott Neustadter, who adapted John Green‘s bestselling novel. If Fox 2000 pulls off this tricky adaptation like it did “Life of Pi,” Woodley will likely be remembered for movies like these, not silly YA franchises.

Matthew McConaughey, “Interstellar” (rumored March 28) — Leave it to Christopher Nolan to nab the hottest actor on the planet, who has totally turned his career around thanks to “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Killer Joe,” “Magic Mike,” “Mud” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” the latter of which is expected to earn him an Oscar nomination. The mere thought of that several years ago would’ve made my head explode. This is the culmination of all the hard work McConaughey has put in to turn his career around. This mysterious voyage will be much more exciting with McConaughey anchoring the cast, plus he has experience exploring space, having starred opposite Jodie Foster in Robert Zemeckis‘ “Contact.”

Michael B. Jordan, “Fantastic Four” (rumored May 2) –While some “Fantastic Four” fans clamor for strict adherence to canon, I believe the best actor for the job deserves a chance, which explains why I’ve been lobbying for more black superheroes for years. The time appears to have finally come, with “Fruitvale Station” star Jordan all but signed to play Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. Fox’s reboot hails from Jordan’s “Chronicle” director Josh Trank, so the duo already have a strong rapport. Jordan has the physique and the wise-cracking sense of humor that the role requires, so who cares if Johnny and Sue Storm are rewritten to be adopted siblings? Jordan is the next major African-American star, and Fox is smart to board the bandwagon early before his asking price goes through the roof.

Julianne Moore“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” (rumored June 27) — You can never have enough strong women in one movie, and Julianne Moore is the perfect fit for this franchise. She’ll play President Alma Coin, who leads the districts’ rebellion against the Capitol. With four Oscar nominations under her belt, Moore will add even more gravitas to the star-studded cast, and we can’t wait to see her share the screen with Jennifer Lawrence.

Melissa McCarthy, “Susan Cooper” (July 25) — When Paul Feig announced his intention to make a female spy comedy, only one actress came to mind, and sure enough, Feig got his girl. After stealing every scene in “Bridesmaids,” McCarthy established herself as a bona fide movie star this year with “Identity Thief” and “The Heat,” and she’s a perfect fit for Feig’s comic vision. Her casting will help dictate the tone of the movie and make it easier for Fox to sell. We can’t wait for their next collaboration.

Ben Affleck, “Batman Vs. Superman” (Aug. 22) — I’ve covered this once before, but I can’t say enough about this choice. I defended Affleck through his darkest years and felt vindicated after he rebounded as a director, though he still hasn’t gotten the respect he deserves as an actor. I think he’ll make a great Caped Crusader, especially considering that director Zack Snyder aims to depict a tired, more world-weary superhero. The haters came out in full force, but in time, Affleck’s casting will be seen as an inspired decision.

Chadwick Boseman in “Get On Up” (Aug. 26) — A rising star after “42,” this seems like a solid match, even if other actors look more like young James Brown. Say what you will about Tate Taylor and how this story should’ve been told by a filmmaker of color, but if he can make “The Help” work, he can pull this off too, and Boseman is a step in the right direction. With charisma to spare, he’s a star in the making. Please, please, please just trust me on this one.

Jennifer Lopez, “The Boy Next Door” (Sept. 6) — The “American Idol” judge had been written off as a movie star in recent years but this low-budget Blumhouse thriller could be the perfect vehicle for her return to the big screen. She plays a cougar who has an affair with her teenage neighbor. This could be awful, or it could be awesome. Either way, a bold stroke of casting genius.

Jamie Dornan, “Fifty Shades of Grey” (Oct. 23) — This Irish hunk and former Calvin Klein model is the perfect fit to slip into Christian Grey’s underwear. The role requires a certain mystery, and Dornan may benefit from audiences’ lack of familiarity with his work. He showed a glimpse of his dark side as a serial killer in the miniseries “The Fall,” and “Fifty” fans have yet to complain about his abs and piercing eyes that suggest a hint of mischief. Despite his limited resume, he should be considered an improvement from Charlie Hunnam, whose heart was never really in the project. Let’s hope Dornan sent him a fruit basket at the very least.

Christoph Waltz, “Horrible Bosses 2” (Oct. 25) — This casting was a bingo! We’ve seen the two-time Oscar winner play humorous villains before, but he’s always had to dial it back a notch due to the “serious” nature of his films. With “Horrible Bosses 2” being a straight-up comedy, Waltz will be able to embrace his inner-clown and go for broke as an evil employer who will be paired with onscreen son Chris Pine. Regardless of their profession, I’m expecting movie magic.

Ben Foster, “Warcraft” (Dec. 4) — Even with Duncan Jones at the helm, I had ZERO interest in this fantasy film until Foster was cast as one of the leads. Foster isn’t typical leading man material but he’s one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood and has been for years. Foster is notoriously selective so he must believe in the project, and I’m glad Legendary believes in him enough to take the gamble.

WORST

Jack Reynor in “Transformers: Age of Extinction” (Jan. 8) — Any unknown actor would be stupid to turn down a role in a blockbuster like the fourth “Transformers” movie. I get that. But Reynor had tremendous buzz coming off the little-seen indie “What Richard Did” and should’ve waited for a better role like something along the lines of Jack O'Connell‘s role as Louis Zamperini in Angelina Jolie‘s “Unbroken.” While this franchise may be getting a boost with Mark Wahlberg (also a dreadful decision on his part, albeit one from 2012), I can’t imagine it’ll be much different than the schlock that came before it, unless director Michael Bay has finally seen the error of his moneymaking ways.

Luke Evans, “The Crow” (May 4) — The Crow is my favorite superhero, so expectations were sky-high for Relativity’s long-gestating reboot. Unfortunately, Evans has yet to prove he has what it takes to step into Brandon Lee’s considerable shoes. Eric Draven has a soft, soulful, sensitive side as well as a wicked sense of humor, and Evans is a little too bland for my taste. I’m still excited about this movie, but I would’ve liked to see Tom Hiddleston in the role. Alas, we’re left to wonder what might’ve been.

Michael B. Jordan, “Creed” (July 24) — Jordan is the hottest young actor in Hollywood. He could’ve done anything he wanted after “Fruitvale Station,” and that goes for writer-director Ryan Coogler too. So it was baffling to learn that these guys wanted to do what is essentially “Rocky 7,” in which Jordan would play Apollo Creed’s grandson. I totally understand the desire to make a boxing movie, but why settle for Stallone’s sloppy sevenths. This franchise has been run into the ground and not even a different perspective can change how much baggage audiences will bring into the theater.

Tyler Perry, “Gone Girl” (rumored July 25) — Director David Fincher deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to casting, but there’s a lot of doubt here, as there is anytime Perry steps out of Madea’s costume. I haven’t read Gillian Flynn‘s bestselling book so I don’t know much about what the role actually requires, but I’m fairly certain that while Perry may be a draw for black audiences, he’ll be a major distraction on screen.

Harrison Ford, “The Expendables 3” (Aug. 6) — Why? I’d love to know just why Ford is signing up for this dreadful action franchise? He’s Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner for crying out loud! This is a straight-up paycheck role, which Ford takes plenty of anyway. I can’t imagine he was yearning to fly to Bulgaria or wherever this unnecessary sequel is filming in eastern Europe. He’s so much better than this material that there’s only one word for it — slumming.

Joel Edgerton, “Exodus” (Aug. 13) –A lily-white Australian playing the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses? What year is this? This might be the single worst casting decision of the year. Edgerton is a great actor but I have a feeling he’s setting himself up for failure here. Plenty of A-list actors have given Ridley Scott a chance and gotten burned, and I have serious concerns about his action-heavy take on the story of Moses… who apparently shoots bow & arrows as if he were Katniss’ father.

Charlie Hunnam, “Fifty Shades of Grey” (Sept. 2) — It was doomed from the beginning. Hunnam’s reps more or less forced him into the coveted role, which he had numerous notes about before ultimately dropping out because he didn’t have adequate time to prepare for the film. Hunnam (and the project) suffered public humiliation, though perhaps he spared himself future embarrassment by leaving the role to a newcomer who could actually benefit from everything it offers.

Gal Gadot, “Batman Vs. Superman” (Dec. 4) — The femme fatale from the “Fast and Furious” franchise would be fine if she was just playing Ben Affleck‘s love interest, but her character will grow into Wonder Woman in future films, and I haven’t seen evidence that she’s up to the task. Sure, the Israeli Army veteran has some serious fighting skills, but does she have the screen presence or the gravitas to hold our attention? I couldn’t even keep her and Elsa Pataky straight in the “Fast” films. I would’ve liked to have seen Evangeline Lilly win this role, but the “Hobbit” star must’ve gotten “lost” in the superhero shuffle.

Ratings: Seth Meyers Ties Top ‘Late Night’ Wednesday in 5 Years

Seth Meyers continued to roll in his third telecast, tying the “Late Night” series’ top ratings for a Wednesday in 5 years.

“Late Night” earned a 0.9 rating in the advertiser-sought adults 18-49 demographic. Additionally, the show’s 2.7 million is the second highest total-viewer result for a Wednesday “Late Night” in 6 years — since Jan. 2, 2008 (2.9 million). It trails only Jimmy Fallon‘s final Wednesday “Late Night”, which aired earlier this month.

This time, however, the show fell shy of topping its combined competition — though just barely. The rounded 2.7 million viewers Meyers pulled in were topped by the roughly 2.8 million for the combination of ABC’s “Nightline” and CBS’ “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Wednesday’s “Late Night” featured Kelly Ripa, Brad Paisley — who doubled as musical guest — and writer Robyn Doolittle. Thursday’s edition is scheduled to include Lena Dunham, Anthony Mackie and musical guest John Mayer Trio.

Fallon’s “Tonight Show” was still solid as well, pulling in a 1.7 rating on night No. 8. Its 5.5 million viewers topped the combined efforts of CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” (2.4 million) and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (2.5 million).

Wednesday’s “Tonight” featured Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler (appearing together) and musical guest Dierks Bentley.

Thursday’s telecast is scheduled to include Denzel Washington, Shaun White and musical guest Sara Bareilles with The Roots.

Conan on Adam Sandler’s Elephant Penis Joke: ‘The Dumbest Story I’ve Ever Heard’ (Video)

Adam Sandler played an elephant’s penis in one-on-one basketball, or so goes the “dumbest story” Conan O’Brien‘s “ever heard.”

While shooting “Blended” in Africa with Drew Barrymore, Sandler sized up an elephant’s six-foot penis and challenged it to a game of hoops, the comedic actor told the Dallas “Conan” audience on Monday.

“He was quick, he could penetrate the hole,” Sandler joked.

See video: Adam Sandler And Drew Barrymore Reunite for Fallon Serenade

But the “Grown Ups” star had a plan: he left the human-sized phallus alone on the outside. After hitting a few open three-pointers, the elephant penis “shrunk down to three feet after some giant explosion,” he told Conan.

Sandler added: “I had to change my sneakers, but I ultimately won the game.”

“That’s the dumbest story I think I’ve ever heard,” O’Brien retorted.

Drew Barrymore proved she was game to get silly on “The Tonight Show” when she was the one to propose a game of “Lip Flip” with Jimmy Fallon. What she actually said was that she’d kind of always wanted to interview herself, but Fallon could think of no better way to do this than with one of his favorite games.

It’s inexplicable why such a silly bit is always funny, but it absolutely is. Through the crude magic of television, Barrymore’s lips were cut and pasted onto Fallon’s face, and vice-versa.

See video: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore Travel to Africa in Trailer for Romantic Comedy ‘Blended’

And yet, when she finally got to speak as Fallon, Barrymore didn’t start asking herself questions. She spent a great deal of time just saying ridiculous things like, “Pizza, pizza, pizza, sometimes I just say ‘za,” and making incomprehensible noises that she clearly thought were representative of Fallon’s New York background.

When she finally asked Fallon’s “Drew Barrymore” what she was into, Fallon fully embraced Barrymore’s free-spirited persona for the answer. “You know what I’m really into right now?” he asked as her, before answering his own question. “Licking tree frogs.”

It was all they could do to keep from laughing and ruining the bit. By the end, the pair came together in a duet of “You’re the One That I Want” from “Grease.” What followed was a split-screen that was equal parts hilarious and nightmarish as the two joyously butchered a musical classic.

‘Blended’ Review: A Better-Than-Average Adam Sandler Movie Is Still an Adam Sandler Movie

$

0

Despite having all the sexual charisma of a booger-eater at his bar mitzvah, Adam Sandler has starred in two of the most fondly remembered (if not actually good) romantic comedies of the past couple of decades: “The Wedding Singer” and “50 First Dates.”

Whatever endurance those two films have beyond their original purpose as money-printing machines can and should be credited to Drew Barrymore, whose sunny, bubbly, wildflowers-in-her-hair presence lent those pictures a sense of warmth and optimism sorely lacking in any other Sandler effort.

See video: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore Travel to Africa in Trailer for Romantic Comedy ‘Blended’

After the high-profile flops of “Jack and Jill” and “That’s My Boy,” the three-time Razzie winner is still piecing his box-office reputation back together. Thus we have a virtual freebie for Happy Madison: a third film with Barrymore, the farting angel whose earthy goofiness perfectly complements Sandler’s man-child puerility.

Though it’s every bit as formulaic as you’d expect it to be, “Blended” is much better than Barrymore and Sandler’s previous collaborations by leaps and bounds. That’s because Barrymore gets to do a lot more than bat her eyelashes and laugh at Sandler’s jokes here, resulting in a tonal tug-of-war between the his-and-her stories that expands the film in enjoyable ways, even if the work doesn’t quite feel cohesive.

Barrymore’s Lauren is a lot pricklier than the actress’ previous incarnations, a Kate Spade-clad divorced mother of two young boys (Braxton Beckham and Kyle Red Silverstein) who lashes out at the chaos of her domestic life by rigorously organizing other people’s closets for a living. She meets schlumpy widowed sports-store manager Jim (Sandler) on an ill-fated blind date at Hooter’s, wherein he chugs her beer while she’s in the bathroom looking for an excuse to go home.

Angry that her night went so awry, Lauren finally asks Jim, “With so many possible reasons, which one’s the one your wife left you for?” “Cancer,” he retorts, just as eager to bruise.

A few weeks and a barely believable series of coincidences later, Lauren and her sons end up sharing a suite in a South African resort with Jim and his daughters: teenage Larry (short for Hilary, played by Bella Thorne), still-mourning Espn (named after the channel, played by Emma Fuhrmann), and blond moppet Lou (Alyvia Alyn Lind).

Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera’s script gives the big, dumb physical gags to Sandler and the boys, but mines some real poignancy, even some melancholy, from Lauren’s kindly introduction to Larry into the ways of girlhood and from Espn’s insistence that she can see her dead mother everywhere. Lauren’s foul-mouthed BFF-ship with her proudly loud gal pal Jen (an underused Wendi McLendon-Covey) recall the best parts of “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat.”

See video: Adam Sandler Reveals His Non-Surgical Trick to Looking Young on ‘Letterman’

But “Blended” director Frank Coraci, a Happy Madison vet, is too much of a company man to elevate this passion-phobic rom-com beyond something more than an above-average Sandler production. Every expectation of a gross-out surprise between a pair of lovers is immediately fulfilled; the film shrinks from intimacy like a snail avoiding human touch.

Barrymore is as luminous as ever, but Sandler hides in his own movie under muumuu-like T-shirts and distracted grimaces. The two screen pros still have barrelfuls of chemistry, but it’s difficult to root for love between a sloth and a butterfly.

See video: Drew Barrymore Flips Lips With Jimmy Fallon, Sings ‘Grease’ Classic

Then there’s the uncomfortable and constant slur-slinging against supposedly ugly and/or flat-chested women. Sandler might claim he’s an equal-opportunity insulter — Larry’s skinny romantic interest (Zak Henri) receives more than his share of abuse, too — but the chauvinistic cracks go a long way in undoing the strong moments of female solidarity scattered throughout the movie.

“Blended” features too many great performances to earn Sandler a fourth Razzie win, or even a tenth Razzie nod, but he won’t have to wait long for his next Golden Raspberry if he can’t think of anything funnier than playground insults for his next film.

‘Blended’ Reviews: Can Adam Sandler Avoid Ruining This One?

When Adam Sandler starred in Judd Apatow‘s “Funny People” back in 2009, he was seemingly playing a tragic version of himself, a once-bright comic star who was ashamed of the equator-broad family comedy crap that had taken over his career.

Some thought that “Funny People” was a statement, of sorts: He was going to leave the junk he’d been producing behind and act in more serious films from that moment forward. Instead, with films like “Grown Ups” earning critical venom and flicks such as “That’s My Boy” and “Jack and Jill” failing in all facets, it seems that his flirtation with self-criticism was more of a fleeting moment of self-awareness.

The latest example is “Blended,” a weird hybrid of PG-13 bro crudeness and family-focused romantic comedy in which Sandler co-stars with Drew Barrymore. He plays a single dad of three girls, she a single mom of two boys, and after they have a disaster of a blind date, they somehow end up together at a family retreat (with their kids in tow) in South Africa. The mechanics of how they get there are a bit complicated and not really worth mentioning, even if they do take up half the film.

Critics have largely lambasted the film, but to be fair, they’re not quite as brutal on Sandler this time around … aside from the New York Post’s Kyle Smith, who writes, “If ‘Funny People’ is any indication, Sandler hates himself, and in ‘Blended’ he invites us to join him. Invitation accepted.”

Most everyone else at least gives the team credit for trying.

Inkoo Kang, TheWrap:

“Blended” director Frank Coraci, a Happy Madison vet, is too much of a company man to elevate this passion-phobic rom-com beyond something more than an above-average Sandler production. Every expectation of a gross-out surprise between a pair of lovers is immediately fulfilled; the film shrinks from intimacy like a snail avoiding human touch.

Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic:

At times it threatens to make you forget it’s a Sandler comedy (“comedy” might be more accurate), with some moments of real sweetness followed by, for instance, a shot of rhinos having sex … Sandler and his team work tirelessly to provide constant reminders that, despite whatever the film might have going for it, you can’t escape the fact that it’s still a stupid Adam Sandler movie.

Andrew Barker, Variety:

“Blended” suffers from a fundamental lack of trust in its audience, following every unexpectedly smart exchange with a numbskull pratfall or one-liner, and every instance of genuine sincerity with an avalanche of schmaltz. Unquestionably an improvement over recent Sandler efforts like “Grown Ups 2,” “Jack and Jill” and “Just Go With It” — which, to be fair, were all truly vile, “death of cinema” sorts of affairs — the film is all the more disappointing for having actual potential to squander.

Anna Smith, London Telegraph:

There’s no doubt some will relate to the gags about gender and child-rearing (he’s clueless about bras, she’s horrified by her son’s porn collection, etc.). But much of comedy is misjudged, and for every cute child there’s an annoying one. Sandler’s jocular, lowbrow goofing will leave many cold, whether he’s goading his teenaged daughter or taking an ill-advised spin on an ostrich.

Ed Douglas, ComingSoon.net:

Here, Sandler tries to make a sensitive chick flick that half works but only when it’s not going for his usual offensive sense of humor … Ultimately, “Blended” isn’t truly awful or unwatchable, but it’s also not particularly groundbreaking, even by Sandler’s standards.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore shared their first film together with 1998’s “The Wedding Singer.” Since then, they’ve come together twice more, on “50 First Dates and their most recent project, “Blended.” Reuniting the stars with their “Wedding Singer” director Frank Coraci, the romantic comedy hits theaters on May 23.

The on-screen couple shared the stage on “Chelsea Lately,” where Chelsea Handler wanted to know if they’d ever shared anything else. “Have you guys ever dated, or were you ever hooked up?” she asked.

“Not even a little,” Barrymore replied. “It’s probably why we’ve been able to stick together all these years, ’cause there never was that awkward moment.”

‘Blended’ Among Adam Sandler’s Biggest Box-Office Bummers

The Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore comedy “Blended” marked the first time the two stars have teamed for a movie in a decade. Given this weekend’s reception at the box office, they may wait another 10 years for the next one.

“Blended” has managed to take in just $14 million over the first three days of the Memorial Day weekend, and will likely top out at $18 million for the four days. It’s not a financial disaster for distributor Warner Bros. or Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, since “Blended” cost roughly $45 million to produce. But it’s among the worst openings ever for Sandler.

It’s a little over the $13.4 million “That’s My Boy” managed in 2012, but way under the $25 million that “Jack and Jill” debuted to in 2011. “Blended” didn’t match Sandler and Barrymore’s previous collaborations, either. It couldn’t take in half of the $39.8 million that 2004’s  “50 First Dates” opened with, and it was even behind “The Wedding Singer,” which opened to $18 million in 1998 — and that’s not accounting for inflation.

“What this shows, after misses like ‘Jack and Jill,’ ‘That’s My Boy’ and ‘Blended,’ is that Sandler, like everyone else in the comedy world, now has to dig a bit deeper to deliver a hit these days,” said Exhibitor Relations vice-president and senior analyst Jeff Bock, “unless, of course, he plunges into ‘Grown Ups 3.'”

The frequently critically reviled films of Sandler, a three-time Razzie winner, have often been critic-proof and his 36 films have taken in more than $2.3 billion at the worldwide box office. But his biggest hits — “Big Daddy” and “The Waterboy” – came more than 15 years ago.

Sandler’s audience has matured as well, and there is a new generation of film comics that is taking the spotlight. “Neighbors,” the Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy, is among a recent wave of R-rated comedies which have seized a lot of the territory that he once dominated. Over the past few years, the films of Judd Apatow (“This Is 40”) and his disciples like Rogen (“This Is the End”), along with others from Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”), Zach Galifiankis (“The Hangover”) and Melissa McCarthy (“The Heat”), have stolen some thunder.

Sandler was last seen on the big screen in “Grown Ups 2.” That one opened to $41 million last July and went on to take in $133 million domestically for Sony and $247 million worldwide.

“The Wedding Singer” director Frank Coraci also did the honors on “Blended,” which featured the two stars as single parents who bump into each other at an African resort. Terry Crews and Joel McHale co-starred. The critics weren’t turned on by the concept and bludgeoned it, and it’s at just 15 percent “fresh” on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

That couldn’t have helped the box office, nor did the comedy competition, with “The Other Woman,” “Million Dollar Arm” and “Chef” all in the top ten. The studio had hoped the presence of Barrymore would draw mature women, and it may over the next couple of weeks, since “Blended” got an “A-” CinemaScore from audience members.

Barrymore has kept a relatively low-profile recently. Her last box-office outing was “Big Miracle,” the save-a-whale tale that opened to $7 million and topped out at $20 million domestically for Universal in 2012. Her last hit was “He’s Just Not That Into You,” an ensemble comedy that opened to $27 million and took in $179 million for Warner Bros. in 2009.

Frank Coraci crafted the first Adam Sander-Drew Barrymore romance, “The Wedding Singer,” a landmark comedy that established the chemistry shared by its two leads.

Sandler was eager to make a romantic comedy at the time so he could introduce himself to new fans and demonstrate a little range. Coraci and Sandler were college friends, and the movie marked their first feature together.

‘X-Men’ Climbs to $302 Million Worldwide, Kicking Off Fox’s Stellar Summer

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” will gross $111 million by the end of the four-day holiday weekend, according to studio estimates distributed early Monday.  Factoring in overseas grosses, Bryan Singer‘s film should top $300 million worldwide in its first few days.

That is the biggest opening of any movie in the “X-Men” franchise, and it kicks off what should be a stellar summer for its distributor, Fox.

The studio already scored two hits in April — “Rio 2” and “The Other Woman.” While the former has grossed just $122 million in the United States, it has surpassed $400 million worldwide thanks to its massive popularity overseas.

“The Other Woman,” a romantic comedy that received middling reviews, has been a big hit thanks to a dearth of movies that appeal to women. With $4.5 million in projected grosses this weekend, the $40 million movie has banked $78 million in the United States – and $164 million worldwide.

This is but a sign of what’s to come for the studio, whose next release is “The Fault in Our Stars,” a teen drama that has rival studios in awe. Based on a book by best-selling author and vlogger John Green, the movie boasts a massive following online and a movie star-in-training in Shailene Woodley.

Its social mentions rival those of fellow blockbusters “X-Men,” “22 Jump Street” and “Maleficent” – not bad for a movie that cost $12 million to produce.

It remains to be seen whether this massive social buzz will translate into tickets sold, but advanced tracking projects an opening of more than $30 million. Fox is underselling the numbers, as all studios tend to do in advance of a release.

Fox’s next release will be “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” as sure a hit as there is this summer. Though the bulk of the grosses will go to DreamWorks Animation, Fox will also benefit from the biggest animated film of the season.

Following “Dragon” is “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” another sequel that poses just one question for its distributor: how high?

The only question mark on the entire schedule is “Let’s Be Cops,” an action comedy set for mid-August. If it hits, all the better. If not, it is a gentle gust during an otherwise serene summer.

As for the rest of the box office, “Godzilla” grossed $38 million and had another strong weekend on IMAX screens, which stuck with the primordial monster rather than jumping to the mutants of “X-Men.”

“Blended” finished third with $17 million for the weekend, a pedestrian opening for the Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore romantic comedy. It barely held off “Neighbors,” which has topped $100 million in just three weeks.

“Million Dollar Arm,” the baseball drama starring Jon Hamm, dipped below $10 million over the holiday, a disappointing result for Disney.

“X-Men” grossed more than all of those movies put together, though next weekend it faces a potent newcomer, Disney’s “Maleficent.”

The Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore comedy “Blended” hasn’t connected, Tom Cruise‘s big-budget sci-fi saga “Edge of Tomorrow” underwhelmed domestically and the upcoming musical “Jersey Boys” doesn’t look strong.

But the sky isn’t falling, and the problem isn’t with the studio’s long-term strategy or its willingness to swing for the fences with big-budget tentpoles too often. We’ll discuss the studio’s real problems this summer, and why creatives in Hollywood should be hoping that it figures them out, and soon.

Four of the hottest stars on TV are joining the cast of Michael Showalter‘s new indie comedy “Hello, My Name Is Doris,” including Natasha Lyonne (“Orange Is the New Black”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) and Kyle Mooney (“Saturday Night Live”), TheWrap has learned.

The comedic quartet join fellow TV stars Max Greenfield (“New Girl”), Beth Behrs (“2 Broke Girls”) and Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”), as well as fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff and two-time Oscar winner Sally Field, who stars as the title character.

Showalter, who made his directorial debut with the underrated 2005 comedy “The Baxter,” co-wrote the script with Laura Terruso.

“Doris” finds Field playing an isolated woman who’s motivated by a self-help seminar to romantically pursue a younger co-worker (Greenfield), who introduces her to the local hipster scene.

A co-production between Haven Entertainment and Red Crown, “Doris” will be produced by Haven’s Jordana Mollick and Kevin Mann and Red Crown’s Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Riva Marker, while Daniel Crown will executive produce. Haven and Red Crown previously teamed on “Life Partners,” which recently premiered at Tribeca.

Showalter produced and co-wrote Lionsgate’s romantic comedy parody “They Came Together,” which stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler and hits theaters Friday. He previously worked with Red Crown on “The Baxter.”

‘Let’s Be Cops’ Looks Like Summer’s Next R-Rated Comedy Hit

The final raunchy comedy in a summer packed with them, “Let’s Be Cops,” opens Wednesday.

If the rest of the season is an indicator and the tracking numbers are on the money, Fox will be laughing its way to the bank after this weekend. The film, which stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as faux peace officers, could go north of $25 million over its first five days say the analysts. The studio is more conservative, but the “Let’s Be Cops” budget is less than $20 million, so it looks like a win going in.

Another financial score with an R-rated comedy isn’t surprising this summer. Sequels and superheroes have been the biggest box-office winners as usual, but raunchy laughs have provided plenty of fireworks — and profits.

“By nature comedies offer something different than the superhero movies and blockbusters,” Rentrak senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap. “Besides being great counter-programming they give audiences something different to consider, and help fend off superhero fatigue.”

Sony’s sequel “22 Jump Street” is the season’s king of comedy, and is about to hit $300 million globally. Universal’s frat vs. family romp “Neighbors” is over $260 million worldwide. And Open Road’s Jon Favreau food truck comedy “Chef” has been the summer’s biggest indie hit with $39 million, roughly three times its production budget.

If “Let’s Be Cops” connects, it will solidify August as a strong launch pad, he said, noting the success of similar raunchy late-summer hits like last year’s “We’re the Millers,” “Pineapple Express,” “Tropic Thunder” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

The studios have maximized their returns, and cut their risks, by holding the line on production costs. Melissa McCarthy‘s “Tammy,” also rated R, has topped out at $82 million domestically, but that’s nearly four times its budget. Even “Blended,” the studio’s Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore romantic comedy disappointed domestically. But it’s not a loss because it cost $40 million – less than a typical Sandler project – and has taken in $121 million globally.

Not only have there been 12 comedies released this summer, a dose of humor has played a part in the recent box office resurgence. Both “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” took direct aim at action fans’ funny bones.

“It’s summer and people are looking for escapist fare,” Dergarabedian said. “Laughs go great with the popcorn movies.”

“Let’s  Be Cops” is directed by Luke Greenfield, who co-wrote the film with Nicholas Thomas.

Fox’s marketing team appears to have driven home the simple premise of “Let’s Be Cops” with moviegoers, and made a point of screening it at the fanboy extravaganza Comic-Con three weeks ago.

“The crowd there loved it,” said Chris Aronson, the studio’s distribution chief, “so we ramped up the screenings and it’s been going over great.”  Rob Riggle, Andy Garcia and Nena Dobrev co-star in the films which is produced by Greenfield, Simon Kinberg (“X-men: Days of Future Past”) and Aditya Sood

There will be screenings starting at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night and by Friday it will be in 3,093 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It’s solid on social media, and was behind only “Ninja Turtles” and “Guardians” in advance sales at online broker Fandango on Tuesday. Lionsgate’s “Expendables 3”and the Weinstein Company’s “The Giver” open wide on Friday as well.

Here’s a chart that shows how much bang for the laugh buck the summer’s biggest comedies managed:
